Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has told Ukrainian troops being trained in Britain that they must mentally prepare for the brutal realities of war, including steeling themselves for the possibility of death and being prepared to kill without hesitation.
Zaluzhnyi, who played a pivotal role in preventing Ukraine from being defeated in the initial stages of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, was sacked as the country’s commander-in-chief following a falling out with President Volodymyr Zelensky, has served as the country’s ambassador to London since July.
Zaluzhnyi’s speech was shared at a boot camp with Ukrainian soldiers who are set to join their countrymen in the frontlines in Ukraine soon. His speech, shared by The Sun after the tabloid joined the general on his tour of the training facility,
The speech, shared by The Sun after the tabloid joined Zaluzhnyi on his tour of the training facility, underscored the escalating intensity of the conflict in Ukraine. British Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard was also present, highlighting the U.K.’s support in training Ukrainian soldiers.
Zaluzhnyi’s warning was blunt. “Remember that the war is becoming more cruel with every day. It leaves almost no chance for survival,” he told the trainees. “Learn not to be afraid of death.”
Zaluzhnyi’s remarks were not just about survival, but the harsh realities of combat. He stressed the importance of building strong bonds of camaraderie, urging the soldiers to become brothers on the battlefield who look after each other.
“It’s not enough to save yourself and your brother; you still need to complete the task. To do this, you will need to kill. To kill without hesitation,” he said.
His words were meant to prepare the soldiers for the mental and emotional toll of fighting in a conflict that shows no signs of ending. He also reminded the soldiers to fight with Ukraine’s survival in mind, adding, “If you are gone, maybe someone else will take your place, but Ukraine will be preserved.” (Related: Ukraine launches 51,000 court cases over DESERTION in the first 9 months of 2024 amid troops’ waning morale.)
Zaluzhnyi’s message reflects the brutal realities of the war, which has become increasingly deadly and complex. Despite initial successes in repelling Russia’s invasion, the conflict has taken a toll on Ukrainian forces. The military stalemate Zaluzhnyi predicted in 2023 has evolved into a prolonged and grueling war that Ukraine is, albeit slowly, still losing. His remarks underscore that survival is no longer guaranteed, and achieving victory requires difficult and often dehumanizing decisions.
Since his reassignment to the London embassy, Zaluzhnyi has continued to raise alarms about the growing global dimensions of the war. In a speech in May 2024, he argued that World War III had effectively begun, pointing to the direct involvement of Russia’s autocratic allies.
“In 2024, Ukraine is no longer facing Russia alone. Soldiers from North Korea are standing in front of Ukraine. Let’s be honest,” he said, referring to the increasing foreign support for Russia’s war effort. He also cited Iranian-made drones used to target Ukrainian civilians, calling attention to the broader international stakes.
“Already in Ukraine, the Iranian ‘Shahedis’ are killing civilians absolutely openly, without any shame,” he said.
Zaluzhnyi’s comments reflect his growing concern that Ukraine’s survival is at risk without further international support. He urged Ukraine’s allies to recognize the gravity of the situation.
“It is still possible to stop it here, on the territory of Ukraine,” he warned, “But for some reason, our partners do not want to understand this. It is obvious that Ukraine already has too many enemies. Ukraine will survive with technology, but it is not clear whether it can win this battle alone.”
